The picture above illustrates a visual contemplation of the wishes of humankind with an attempt to elevate consciousness towards the manifestation of peace on earth.
Japanese legend from the 11th century at Kakamura, describes a feudal leader celebrating a Buddhist festival in which birds and animals were set free, by releasing hundreds of cranes as thanksgiving after a successful battle.  Each crane had a prayer strip attached on its leg to pray for those killed in battle, therefore associating the crane with the celebration of peace and prayers for those lost in war.
According to Japanese folklore the indigenous red hooded crane has a reputation for long life (at least a thousand years) and prosperity, thus becoming a symbol of good health.  Origami paper cranes became a popular gift for those who were ill.
"Sadako And The Thousand Paper Cranes" written by Edna Ritzenberg describes the poignant story of two-year old girl who survived the horrific atom bomb at Hiroshima, only to succumb to leukemia 11 years later.  During her final months in hospital her friend gave her a golden paper crane there by stimulating her to fold a thousand paper cranes as it was told that her wish of being healed would come true. At Hiroshima today there is a memorial and a statue of Sadako in dedication of her courage and stands as a reminder of the devastation results of war.

In her hands sits a golden paper crane.

Welcome to 2010!!!!!

Seeing the Waterhouse show and Avatar all in one week was truly a senses breaker!!!!

All five senses exhausted but energized!!  That is the key.  The energy in both venues was what struck me the most.  Good painting and all great art hits you right in the heart.

Imagination!!!  We can manifest that which we believe is the truth!!

Witnessing the power of the earth and nature: recently with the earthquake in Haita has affected me deeply!!

Should I be  painting at a time like this?

Absolutely!   Aside from my donations, I posess an instinctive visual responsibility to paint an energetic positive  reference of our human existence.  We can dwell on the negative and in doing so, we cement its existence.  I prefer we look at our glasses half full and realize everything we do affects the positive balance of our surroundings.

I want to expose you to a very important show currently showcasing the wonderful works of John William Waterhouse, Garden of Enchantment currently on from October 2, 2009 through to February 7, 2010 at The Montreal museum of Fine Art. Follow the prompts to wet your appetite of paintings from the late 19th century that affirm our human potential.

One of the primaries.  When used in a painting it is the third color (first yellow, then orange)that attracts your eye.  It can be warm, it can be cool.  It can be mixed.  To our human eye we  can see it everywhere.  As a painter how do we transfer this information?  Do we do this literally or are we at the mercy of our pigments?

Welcome and thank you for visiting ! I must start with my amazing trip recently to Washington D.C. USA. I attended The Portrait Society of America conference where I had the pleasure to become extremely inspired and educated by some of the foremost leading contemporary artists in the portrait arena. I also had the distinct pleasure of visiting The National Gallery and The National Portrait Gallery, both part of the comprehensive Smithsonian Institute. A smaller gallery, The Phillips Collection also did not escape my attendance.
